Maersk Fluid Technology has been invited as key presenters at the Asian version of Marine Propulsion's Marine Engineering Conference. The topic is Blending-on-Board of main engine lubricants and its relevance with new fuel sulphur regulations coming up in 2020.

Even with new regulations coming into force, the business case for Blending-on-Board remains strong, but changes in additive package compositions are likely to happen and the importance of base-number will be changing as regulation is implemented.

Maersk Fluid Technology will be present at SMM, on stand number A5.210, with actual examples of the company’s Blending-on-Board (BoB) system and the associated XRF scrapedown oil analyser.

With current industry concerns about cold corrosion, and the need to adjust fuel sulphur levels to meet emissions limits, the importance of using cylinder oil of the correct alkalinity level has never been greater. Experience in some of the world’s largest fleets has proved that BOB is a simple, low-cost, flexible, reliable and environmentally-friendly method of achieving this.

Run at minimum recommended cylinder lubrication regardless of fuel sulphur content.

Sune Lilbaek, Head of Sales at Maersk Fluid Technology, explains:

  “The BOB system added to the existing lubrication system and after installation it will no longer be necessary to adjust cylinder oil feed rates is needed regardless of the sulphur content in the fuel oil. When switching from traditional lubrication oil to our future-proof blending system, experience with the current 200 installations has proved that it will be possible to achieve lubrication at or close to the lowest allowed consumption of lubricant as specified by the engine manufacturer. This results in the cylinder lubricant from the BOB system always matching the sulphur content in the fuel. It is no longer necessary to increase lubricant supply to counter corrosive wear or fouling – instead the concentration of BN and other additives are adjusted on-the-fly, creating a fit-for-purpose cylinder oil at same or better quality than a standard fixed-BN cylinder oil. Being able to match lubricant with the fuel in use translates to proven reductions of up to 50% in consumption. Once the system has been set up, on-board engineers will merely need to enter the sulphur content of the fuel in use and the system will automatically blend a cylinder oil matching the fuel sulphur – the process can be fully automated and does not require interaction from the operator. “

Best of all – BOB is easily retrofitted to existing vessels

Utilising the in-use system oil for blending is a clear-cut win for the engine

As the oil used for blending down the concentrate is taken from the in-use system oil, system oil is frequently replenished with new stock. This prevents the oil quality deterioration that otherwise takes place for any system oil. As a result, anti-wear and detergency properties are as for a new oil and on top of this, the system oil viscosity is maintained and waste system oil disposal and oil cleaning energy consumption is reduced by up to 80%.

Experience has shown that by maintaining the original viscosity of the system oil, friction losses are reduced and fuel consumption has proven to be cut by up to 1.5%. Cleaner system oil has, in addition, a positive impact on wear of components and maintenance of separators and filters. Taking into account the reduced fuel and lubricating oil consumption and lower waste oil disposal costs, payback times of less than two years can be expected.

  Maersk Tankers orders 12 Blending-On-Board systems for medium-size MAN Diesel & Wärtsilä 2-stroke engines

In the second half of 2015, Maersk Fluid Technology introduced a new version of its cylinder oil ‘Blending-On-Board’ (BOB) system, targeting medium-sized 2-stroke propulsion engines with a cylinder bore between 420 and 680 mm.

Now the first volume order has been placed for retrofit of the SEA-Mate® B1000 system onto 12 tankers delivered to Maersk Tankers between 2005 and 2008 - ten vessels equipped with Wärtsilä (WinGD) RTA and RT-Flex engines with a bore between 580 and 620 mm and two vessels with medium-bore engines designed by MAN Diesel & Turbo.”


The ordered BOB systems are simple to retrofit onboard existing vessels and will be installed during 2016 without the need to interrupt vessels schedule. With the systems installed the vessels will be able to blend from 30-140 BN cylinder oil, utilizing the in-use system oil as a base-oil. The system is fully approved for the MAN Diesel & Turbo and Wärtsilä (WinGD) engines in question.

The BOB system is expected to facilitate up to 40% reduction of current lube-oil consumption, cleaner main engine system oil and fuel savings of at least 0.5% for both MAN Diesel & Turbo and Wärtsilä (WinGD) 2-stroke engines. Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Engine equipment ran a follow-up feature to their Dec-Jan feature and the European Marine Engineering Conference in April. The article notes that MAN Diesel & Turbo has confirmed that Blending-on-Board lubrication is suitable for its current range of electronically controlled ME engines, if viscosity is right. The feature also stress that the oil used for blending is the in-use system oil and not sludge oil as originally mentioned as an option by the Marine Propulsion magazine.

Maersk Group & Qatargas signs Technical Cooperation agreement mentioning Blending-On-Board

In the technical collaboration agreement between Qatargas and Maersk Group signed in first quarter of 2016, our Blending-on-Board is highlighted as a technology that QatarGas finds to be very exciting and one of the future collaboration areas for reduction of vessel running cost.

On February 23rd, Maersk Group CEO Niels S. Andersen and QatarGasCEO Mr. Khalid Ben Khalifa Al-Thani, signed a Letter of Intent for Technical Collaboration between Qatargas and Maersk. The agreement aims at exploring opportunities related to use of LNG for marine propulsion.

In this connection, Qatargas mentions Maersk Fluid Technology’s Blending-on-Board in connection with innovative technologies of interest as follows:

Maersk Line currently operates more than one in six of the world’s container vessels. Subject to the required infrastructure being made available and the development of cost-efficient LNG propelled vessels, early predictions suggest a larger scale use of this propulsion technology by ship owners in the future. Among their many innovations, Maersk has developed an on-board lubrication oil system to recycle used lubricants resulting in savings while maintaining safe, reliable and optimized engine conditions.

Maersk Fluid Technology have met up with Qatargas several times to discuss implementation of the BOB technology on their fleet, noting that the flexibility of the “fit-for-purpose” lubrication made possible with blending-on-board makes it perfect for blending of cylinder oils matching fuels with very dfferent sulphur content properties. This is not only useful for future dual-fuel engine vessels but also for vessels with conventional 2-stroke diesel engines bunkering fuel with different sulphur content.

  Presenting Blending-on-Board at European Marine Engineering Conference 2016

Visitors to the 2016 European Marine Engineering Conference in Amsterdam this year will be able to hear a keynote speech from Maersk Fluid Technology managing director Jens Byrgesen, who will talk about his company’s success with Blending-On-Board lubrication technology.

Maersk’ SEA-Mate Blending-On-Board concept is based on proprietary technology designed to enable the operator to custom blend a fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant from recycled two-stroke system oil and a cylinder oil concentrate with a base-number up above 300 BN.

The SEA-Mate concept is designed to address the needs of today's operational challenges, such as slow-steaming, changes between different fuel types with different sulphur content, crankcase cleanliness issues and system oil performance concerns.

As a topic, Blending-On-Board divides opinion within the industry, with many of the leading lube manufacturers advising caution, but with a number of shipowners apparently seeing benefits from employing the technology. Indeed, independent consulting company BWSC has documented that the system facilitates a fuel consumption reduction up to 1.5% and owners find it is possible to reduce lube oil consumption by up to 50%.

The first Blending-On-Board systems were commissioned back in 2008 and today there are more than 200 systems in active operation.

As an example: Blending-On-Board was installed on Emma Maersk in 2012. Back then, Maersk Line estimated cost savings from reduced lubricant and fuel consumption for Emma Maersk in excess of US$100,000 per year and the total operating savings from the Blending-On-Board technology installed on Maersk Line ships to be in excess of US$17 million per year.

Small and otherwise unimpressive to look at, BoB comes with a skill most commercial vessels, regardless of size, are willing to pay for these days, namely, operational performance at a lower cost.
This is also why more than 169 Maersk Line vessels will have BoB on board by the end of 2015, and why a number of other external shipping lines have placed orders.

Blending-on-Board was installed on Emma Maersk in 2012. Since then, Maersk Line estimates cost savings from reduced lubricant and fuel consumption for Emma Maersk in excess of USD 100,000 per year. The total operating savings from the BoBs installed on 169 Maersk Line ships is expected to be in excess of USD 17 million per year, with each vessel saving different amounts depending on the size of the ship, engine type, operating parameters and other factors.

  It started purely from a desire to reduce the cost of lubricant for the Maersk fleet. But, what we have today as a result is a whole lot more, including greater knowledge of our engines, vessel maintenance and fuel efficiency”.

 New product launch: SEA-Mate® Blending on board B1000

In order to meet the requirements of different engine sizes, the innovative blending on board model B1000 has been developed, targeting small to medium sized engines. BOB B1000 has the same functionalities as B3000, and offer a cost-effective and flexible way to custom-blend your vessel’s cylinder oil. BOB B1000 can also operate with 2 stroke engines, and has been approved by LIoyd Register and ABS’s.

Commissioning of new prototype blender, BOB B1000, was done onboard Clara Maersk on 28th June 2015. The new blender is targeted small to medium size engines. We are excited about this development and hope it will open the marine market for a significantly larger number of vessels, supplementing the larger B3000 blender.

We are pleased to announce that Maersk Fluid Technology A/S have received another SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board order for 56 Maersk Line vessels.

SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board systems are now being installed on a total of 181 vessels.

Value proposition for vessel owners arise from fuel saving, lube oil saving and operational & maintenance optimization. Payback time ranges from below ½ year up to 2 years, depending on engine type.

2015 ECA Lubrication challenge – SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board have also been tested with good results in an engine operating on distillate fuel and we therefore believe that SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board will be able to handle the 2015 ECA lubrication challenge, for a wide range of engine types.

More than 80 representatives from Chinese Ship-owners have confirmed their attendance and this event is the official PrimeServ launch of Blending-on-Board in China.

Since first installation of SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board systems back in 2009 on-board 4 Wartsila engine powered vessels, tangible savings and operational benefits have been secured by Maersk Line, Limited. In connection with bringing 10 new vessels into their fleet, all Wartsila powered, SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board system have been chosen in order to secure fuel, lube oil and spare part savings.

Maersk Line is using the SEA-Mate® Blending-on-Board system with both MAN and Wärtsilä diesel engines. Both OEMs have endorsed and approved the system and both are SEA-Mate® distributors. More than a million hours of on-board testing in Maersk’s worldwide fleet show that SEA-Mate® reduces bunker fuel consumption by at least 0.5% and up to 1.5% at slow steaming. Lube oil consumption is also cut by up to 40%. Results have been confirmed by independent testing.

Conclusive proof that the SEA-Mate® Blending on Board can provide fuel efficiency savings.

Maersk Fluid Technology in conjunction with a Blending on Board installation, recently carried out a carefully monitored field trial using a land based stationary 2-stroke MAN engine 9K80MC-S to measure fuel efficiency potential through the use of SEA-Mate® Blending on Board.

The actual test was performed by an independent company, Burmeister Wain Scandinavian Contractor, who provided corroborated evidence of fuel savings of 0.5% at 90% M.C.R and up to 1.5% at slow steaming conditions.

To put this into context, for a typical, large 2-stroke propulsion engine, savings will exceed USD 100,000 per annum.

23 January 2009. MAN Diesel PrimeServ and Maersk Fluid Technology have agreed to form a strategic partnership, where MAN Diesel PrimeServ will represent Maersk Fluid Technology's SEA-Mate® line of products to operators of MAN Diesel equipment in both the marine and stationary power markets and on a global scale.

The philosophy behind the SEA-Mate® product line is to provide innovative and technologically-advanced products, services and solutions with respect to fuels or lubricants used in marine or stationary power equipment, allowing operators the utmost flexibility, advanced performance and significantly-reduced operating costs. Initially, the focus will be on two-stroke engines and both the optimisation of system and cylinder-lubricant usage as well as improved engine performance. In addition, tools are provided to allow for near real-time oil analysis as an enabler for predictive maintenance of any rotating machinery aboard vessels, capable of communication to home-base as well as utilising neural networking for vessel-by-vessel, fleet-by-fleet, equipment-by-equipment optimisation.

The initial systems provided, namely the SEA-Mate® Analyzer and SEA-Mate® Blending on Board (sold collectively, or the analyser separately) developed by Maersk Fluid Technology will enable operators to analyse lubricants and fuels in near real-time for fluid and engine performance and thus allow for the fine-tuning of engine operation. In addition, various other fluid solutions and services are under development and expected to be introduced to the market in 2009.
